Tantric, deep tissue or relaxation massage: which should you book?

Three very different treatments share the word massage. This guide compares tantric massage with deep tissue and myofascial release and with lighter relaxation and lymphatic work, so you can match the treatment to how you feel rather than guess.

The short answer

  • Specific pain, stiffness or posture tension: book deep tissue and myofascial release
  • Puffiness, heaviness or a need for something very gentle: book manual lymphatic drainage
  • A busy mind, stress and a wish to feel present in your body: book tantric massage

Deep tissue and myofascial release

A firm, targeted treatment. Slow, sustained pressure works into the deeper muscle layers, and gentle, prolonged stretch is applied to the fascia around restricted areas. It is the right choice when a lighter massage no longer feels enough and you can point to where the problem is: shoulders, lower back, hips or legs after training.

Expect to be asked about pressure throughout, and expect some tenderness for a day or two afterwards. Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes.

Relaxation and lymphatic massage

At the lighter end, manual lymphatic drainage uses feather-light, rhythmic strokes along the lymphatic pathways. It is almost meditative, suits anyone who finds pressure uncomfortable, and is the treatment for puffiness, fluid retention and heavy legs. The Brazilian lymphatic and body sculpt massage builds on the same technique with contouring strokes.

Tantric massage

Tantric massage is defined by pace and attention rather than pressure. Strokes are long, slow and connected across the whole body, guided breathing and a short meditation open the session, and aromatherapy and light sensory touch are woven through it. Pressure can still be adjusted from light to firm, but the aim is presence and a settled nervous system rather than releasing a particular muscle.

It is the most immersive of the three and the only one offered in a 120 minute format. It is for adults aged 18 and over and begins with a consultation covering preferences and boundaries.

Side by side

  • Pressure: deep tissue is firm, lymphatic is feather-light, tantric is adjustable and usually light to medium
  • Pace: deep tissue is slow and specific, lymphatic is rhythmic, tantric is slow and continuous
  • Focus: deep tissue on problem areas, lymphatic on fluid and the whole body, tantric on breath, presence and whole-body sensation
  • Best for: deep tissue for pain and posture, lymphatic for puffiness and recovery, tantric for stress and switching off
  • Durations: deep tissue 60 or 90 minutes, lymphatic 60 or 90 minutes, tantric 60, 90 or 120 minutes

Can you combine them?

Yes, across separate visits. Many clients alternate: deep tissue when training load or desk tension builds, tantric or lymphatic work when the priority is rest. Cupping can be added to a deep tissue session. Tantric massage is booked on its own so the full session keeps its pace.

Questions

Common questions

Is tantric massage firmer or lighter than deep tissue?

Usually lighter. Deep tissue is built around firm, sustained pressure. Tantric massage keeps pressure adjustable, and most clients choose light to medium so the focus stays on breath and sensation.

Which is best for stress?

If stress shows up as a tight neck and shoulders, deep tissue gives the quickest physical relief. If it shows up as a racing mind and an inability to switch off, tantric massage is the better fit.

Can I book deep tissue and tantric massage in the same week?

Yes. Leave a day or two between them so any tenderness from deep tissue work has settled before a tantric session.
